Waggle Bookshelf
2022, Baltic Birch Plywood
This bookshelf was inspired by previous work making a stool and an impulse to explore the same playful visual language. Each shelf has a snap fit joint inside and cross lap outside. I engineered this clever joinery solution so that the piece could be assembled without any glue or fasteners.
This piece was modeled in Rhino 3D, CNC machined and finished by hand.

The shelves use a dual-joint design to hold the entire system together. Snap-fit joints, concealed within interior slots, push outward against the sides, while exterior cross-lap joints wrap around and push inward. The opposing forces lock everything in place, making the shelves sturdy enough to support books from mass market paperbacks to large hardcovers.
