Pastoral headboard

Vintage 1960s tapestry, Solid Walnut, Plywood, Upholstery Materials

This project started with a Pinterest image — I kept returning to this scene featuring a large-scale tapestry hung loosely behind a bed. I loved the vintage naturalistic touch but wanted something more considered: a real headboard, padded and comfortable, that would secure and frame the textile.

I sourced a vintage Bulgarian tapestry and designed around its dimensions. My goal was to find a design that complimented the textile without competing with it.

The wide walnut top came from a single piece of wood that was too short to use as-is; I ripped it, flipped the halves, and glued them into a book-match. The grain line that resulted mirrors the mountain ridge in the tapestry's background — a welcome result of material necessity.

Process

Rough renders explored classic frames, traditional arches, and faux-suspended options, each tested against the tapestry's size restrictions. The final direction: a classic frame with an oversized top — a wide board of book-matched walnut lending presence and warmth.
