Atelier Jouffre

A library of bespoke textures designed to expand Jouffre's custom CNC offerings.

These fully customizable, infinitely scalable 3D textures are generated through a suite of custom Grasshopper tools I built from scratch. Programmed randomness gives each texture a handmade quality, while adjustable parameters allow precise control over every variable: density, depth, scale, and more. The result is a texture that can be simulated, rendered, and machined exactly to a client's specifications before a single cut is made.

The library has become a consistent point of interest for clients and has been incorporated into several projects at the studio.

TEXTURE APPLICATIONS

These textures have served as an inspiration for interior designers like Katie Leede, who commissioned a sideboard from Jouffre featuring the “Open Waters” texture I designed. In this video, she walks you through her design process, explaining how she "started with this unbelievable sample.”

My role in this piece was the texture: I visualized different scale and density options for the client, so they would know exactly how the texture would look before carving ever started.

  • Open Waters

    Dense, varied wave gouging that catches light across its surface — fluid enough to repeat infinitely without ever repeating itself.

  • Skipping Stones

    Scooped carvings bordered by Voronoi-generated edges, mimicking the cellular geometry of cracked earth.

  • Wandering Spiral

    Algorithmic lines spanning between concentric spirals, mimicking the variation of a handmade mark — and scalable to any size without losing that quality.

  • Bloom

    Lines radiating and overlapping in every direction, recalling a sunburst.

  • Journeys

    Overlapping lines that evolve iteratively from each prior line, building a sense of continuous movement.

  • Flying Kites

    Organic, roughly square surfaces that balance regularity with a playful looseness. Structured enough to tile, alive enough to feel handmade.

  • Knock Knock

    Tiled pill engravings arranged in a satisfying grid — architectural and rhythmic, with a retro-modernist edge.

  • Wandering Spiral

    Another implementation of the Wandering Spiral program with different variables - bit size, spiral spacing, density.
